WOUB FM radio studio to be dedicated to former producer, host Jan Sole

NOVEMBER 3, 2008—On Friday, Nov. 7, the FM Radio Studio for the WOUB Center for Public Media at Ohio University in Athens will be renamed the Jan Sole FM Studio, in memory of the late producer, announcer and morning classical music host whose voice was known to WOUB listeners for 23 years. She passed away in July 2007.

The studio is being dedicated in Sole’s memory as a result of a gift from her husband, John, of Athens; and her brother, Carl Cawood, of Columbus. The dedication will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 7, in TV Studio A on the fifth floor of the Radio Television Communication Building, at 9 S. College Street in Athens. A plaque will later mark the Jan Sole FM Studio on the third floor of the building.

“We wanted to do something special to remember Jan,” said John Sole, who says members of her family and several of her lifelong friends plan to attend the event.

Sole began her career at WOUB in television programming and transitioned to radio in the 1980s. She first hosted a Sunday morning classical music program on WOUB-AM and then became a radio announcer for WOUB-FM when it changed to a classical music format in the late ’80s. She also hosted several programs on arts and music.

“Jan truly loved her work and the people she worked with,” said Cawood. “I’m glad that she’ll be remembered at the University for doing something that was such an important part of her life.”

Scripps College of Communication Dean Greg Shepherd is also pleased to have Sole’s name on an important space at the WOUB Center for Public Media.

“John and Carl have made a generous gift of remembrance,” he said. “It has been hard to pass by the FM studio this past year without thinking of Jan, but now all will be called to know her significance to this place by its name, the Jan Sole Studio.”
