VisCom, journalism alumni team wins human rights media award

ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 17, 2008)—Chance Multimedia’s story “Living with the Dead: Manila’s North Cemetery” has been named the winner of Every Human has Rights Media Awards.

The award honors the 60th anniversary of the United Nation’s Declaration of Human Rights. The declaration established a common standard for human achievement for all every person in every nation based on values of freedom, equality, solidarity, tolerance and respect.

Chance Multimedia is owned and operated by James Chance, MA ’05, and his wife Jessica Schneider Chance, BSJ ’03.

“It is a great honor for us to receive this award,” said James Chance. “We are hopeful that it will bring a little more attention to the difficulties people in Manila face to secure housing.”

“Living with the Dead: Manila’s North Cemetery” explores the city’s problems with poverty and overcrowding by focusing on a group of people who choose to live in a cemetery rather than to live in the slums.

The pair will travel to Paris in December to receive the award and meet with human right advocates and other winners.
