Employee Recognition

L.J. Hortin Faculty Mentor Award

The Scripps College of Communication annually honors a faculty member who demonstrates exemplary mentoring of students both in and outside the classroom, during and after the college years.

Created and supported by Tom Kuby (BSJ '55), the L.J. Hortin Faculty Mentor Award was established in 2000 to honor Kuby's mentor, Loren Joseph Hortin, professor of journalism at Ohio University from 1947 to 1967.

The award is given annually to a current or former faculty member who exhibits a commitment to the professional and personal growth of students. The selection process is based on faculty members' continual efforts to go beyond the normal mentoring role, their ongoing relationship with the nominator, and their impact on his or her career.

Recipients of the award thus far include Media Arts and Studies Professor Drew McDaniel (2008), Journalism Professor Emeritus Ralph Izard (2007), Visual Communication Professor Emeritus Chuck Scott (2006), Honors Tutorial College Dean Emeritus Joseph Berman (2005), Journalism Distinguished Professor Emeritus Guido H. Stempel III (2004), Journalism Professor Emerita Dru Riley Evarts (2003), Assistant Professor of Telecommunications Joe Richie (2002) and current Dean of University College and Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies David Descutner (2001). Each received a plaque and $1500 for professional development or the Scripps College initiative or program of their choice.

Please send nominations to scrippscollege@ohiou.edu.

Although nominations are accepted year-round, those received by April 15, 2008 will be considered for the 2008 Award.

Scripps College of Communication Employee and Student Employee of the Year Awards

The Scripps College of Communication established the employee recognition program to honor outstanding employees who set standards for excellence and innovation. These employees contribute to the College by promoting unity, community, continuity and visibility through outstanding individual achievement, contribution, innovation and job performance. Through their efforts, others' achievements are inspired and supported.

This program recognizes both an employee and a student employee each year. The Employee of the Year is awarded $1000, and the Student Employee of the Year receives $500.

The employees of the year are nominated by their colleagues and chosen by Dean Gregory J. Shepherd and the directors of each of the six units within the Scripps College of Communication.

The 2008-2009 Employee and Student Employee of the Year will be announced in May 2009.
